Bio

Anne has been an award-winning artist and art educator for many years. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a concentration in Textile Design. Working in NYC as a textile designer for over a decade she learned much about color and design.  Here she developed a fresh, loose and vivid style of painting. Returning to the Philadelphia area, she began painting in watercolor and then in pastel. She loves the way pastel weaves drawing and painting together to create beautiful textures and effects that only pastel can achieve.

Painting mainly Plein Aire she tries to interpret the landscape not as a realist painter, but as an artist trying to capture the feeling and hidden colors of the scene before her. She loves color and painting outdoors has helped her see the world in a different light. Predominantly painting locally, she also enjoys painting landscapes and scenes from her travels.

Anne’s work is on display in public and private collections. Her paintings have been selected for many national juried exhibitions and has received numerous awards. She is a member of the Philadelphia Pastel Society, a signature member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and other local art societies. Her website is annesantoleriwhalon.com .

Demo Description

From photograph to sketch to underpainting to finished piece, Anne will demonstrate a loose approach to simplifying a photo to capture the essence of the scene. Using inks and a brayer to lay down an under wash of colors, this will set the stage to create beautiful depth of color before applying pastels.

Workshop Description

Anne will demonstrate the step-by-step process of painting from a photograph using soft pastel over an underpainting of inks applied with a brayer and rubbing alcohol on UArt (natural color) sanded pastel paper.  Participants will be working from their own reference photos.  A short painting demo will be done in the morning with plenty of one on one individual instruction throughout the day.
